Overview

  • Temporary Residence Permit (TRP): Extending Your Stay in Malawi

    Introduction
The Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) is designed for visitors who have exceeded their initial 90-day stay in Malawi but need to remain longer. Whether you are visiting for tourism, personal reasons, or conducting business, the TRP allows you to extend your stay legally for an additional six months. However, employment is strictly prohibited under this permit, and dependents are not allowed. Joombaah facilitates knowledge to help you navigate the TRP application process with ease.

    Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Temporary Residence Permit, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • You must have a valid Visitor or Business Permit that covers your initial 90-day stay.
    • The applicant must provide a copy of their passport showing the data page.
    • A covering letter from the applicant or sponsor is required.
    • Optionally, you can submit copies of Visitor Permit extensions, return or onward air tickets, and company registration certificates if applicable.

    Application Process
Here are the steps to apply for the Temporary Residence Permit:

    1. Ensure you have a valid Visitor or Business Permit for your initial stay.
    2. Prepare all necessary documents, including a copy of your passport and a covering letter explaining your reason for requesting the TRP.
    3. Submit your application through the Immigration Department, either online or by visiting the Immigration Office in person.
    4. Upon approval, visit the FDH Bank Counter at the Immigration Office to pay the $50 USD fee.

    Permit Fees
The Temporary Residence Permit comes with a fee of $50 USD. Payments must be made at an FDH Bank Counter located in one of the Immigration offices after approval. Failure to pay this fee promptly may result in the delay or cancellation of your permit.

    Validity and Renewal
The TRP is valid for a period of six months. You may be eligible to renew the permit for an additional six months, provided you submit updated documentation and meet the eligibility criteria. Employment remains prohibited during your stay under this permit, and dependents are not allowed.

    Additional Information
Applicants should note that the Malawi e-Permit system conducts checks against law enforcement databases, and providing false information may result in criminal or administrative penalties. Permit approval means that you are eligible, but final approval will be determined by an Immigration Officer upon arrival or at the Immigration Office Headquarters.
