Overview

  • Certificate of Residence: Requirements, Fees, and Application Process in Uganda

The Certificate of Residence in Uganda is a crucial permit that allows individuals to live and work in the country for a specified period. This permit is divided into three categories based on the applicant's circumstances: long stay, marriage to a Ugandan citizen, and former Ugandan citizens who have acquired citizenship in other countries.

    General Information

    1. Due to Long Stay:

      • Applicants must have continuously lived legally in Uganda for a minimum of 10 years.
      • Must demonstrate good character and integrity.
      • Must have contributed to the socio-economic and intellectual development of Uganda.
    2. Due to Marriage:

      • Applicants must be legally married to a Ugandan citizen.
      • The marriage should be subsisting for at least 3 years.
    3. Former Ugandan Citizens:

      • This category is for Ugandans who have acquired citizenship in other countries.

This permit allows the applicant to reside and work in Uganda for varying durations, which can be granted for 5 years, 10 years, or for a lifetime.

    Application Process

Once the application is submitted, it is reviewed by an Immigration Officer. During the approval process, additional information may be required, which can be submitted electronically through the "Manage your applications" portal. The decision will be communicated via email, and if approved, an approval letter will be sent as an attachment.

It’s important to note that a travel letter does not grant permission to enter Uganda. Applicants from visa-prone countries must apply for a visa before traveling to Uganda. Upon entry, a valid travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months must be presented.
