Eligibility Requirements for Naturalization
To qualify for naturalization, applicants must meet the following criteria as per the Ghanaian Citizenship Act 2000:
- Residency: Must have resided in Ghana for the full twelve months prior to application and, over the last seven years, have lived in Ghana for at least five years in total.
- Character: Two Ghanaians of standing (e.g., notaries, lawyers, or senior officials) must provide written attestations of good character.
- No Imprisonment: Must not have been sentenced to imprisonment in Ghana or abroad.
- Language and Culture: Should demonstrate an ability to speak a Ghanaian language and show assimilation into Ghanaian culture.
- Contribution: Must have contributed, or be capable of contributing, to Ghana’s national progress.
- Permanent Residency Intent: Must intend to reside permanently in Ghana if naturalization is granted.
- Residence Permit: Should hold a valid residence permit at the time of application.
Documents Required for Naturalization
- Application Form: Purchase and complete Naturalization Form 5, available at the Ministry of the Interior.
- Letter to the Minister: Write an application letter addressed to the Minister for the Interior.
- Residence Permit: Submit a copy of the current residence permit or indefinite residence permit.
- Business Documentation (if applicable): Certificate to commence business, Company Code, Certificate of Incorporation, Audited Accounts, Tax Clearance Certificate, and SSNIT (Social Security and National Insurance Trust) documentation.
- Property Documentation: Provide proof of landed property ownership (indenture).
- Passport Copy: Include a copy of the bio-data page of the passport.
- Photos: Four recent passport-size photographs with a white background.
