Overview

  • Provision of Exemption Certificates in Lieu of Residence Permits for Diplomatic Community in Botswana

    Introduction

The Republic of Botswana provides diplomatic personnel with Exemption Certificates in place of residence permits. These certificates ensure that diplomats and their families are not subject to the usual immigration requirements and can reside in Botswana without the need for residence permits. This article explains the eligibility criteria, the application process, and the supporting documents required for obtaining these certificates.

    Eligibility for Exemption Certificates

Exemption certificates are issued to the following members of the diplomatic community:

    • Diplomatic agents accredited to Botswana.
    • Family members of the diplomatic agent, including:
      • Spouse.
      • Children under 18 years of age.

For family members who do not meet the criteria for exemption certificates, such as children over 18 but below 25 years of age, dependent children over 25, and dependent parents over 65, Residence Permits are issued.

Supporting Documents Required for Exemption Certificates

To apply for an Exemption Certificate, the following documents must be submitted:

    1. A Note Verbale (formal communication from a diplomatic mission).
    2. Completed Application Form.
    3. Copy of Passport.
    4. Two passport-sized photographs.
    5. Additional Documents:
      • Marriage Certificate for the spouse.
      • Birth Certificates for children below 18 years.

For family members requiring a Residence Permit (children over 18 and less than 25, or dependent parents), similar documentation will be required, accompanied by proof of dependence.

How to Apply for an Exemption Certificate

Applications for Exemption Certificates must be made through a Note Verbale and submitted to the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation (Department of Protocol and Consular Affairs). The Ministry will facilitate the processing of the exemption certificate application with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

    Steps for Application:

    1. Submit a Note Verbale to the Ministry of International Affairs.
    2. Attach a completed application form, a copy of the passport, and two passport-sized photographs.
    3. For spouses and children under 18, also attach a marriage certificate and birth certificate, respectively.
    4. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship will issue the Exemption Certificate upon approval.

    Processing Time

    • Immediate: Once all required documents are submitted, the process is completed without delay.

    Cost

    • No cost: There are no fees associated with the issuance of exemption certificates.
